Escape the City Buzz: Conquering La Chorrera – Colombia's Tallest Waterfall!
Bogotá is a vibrant, bustling metropolis, but sometimes, you just need to swap the urban hum for the symphony of nature. If you're looking for an incredible hiking in Bogota adventure that will leave you breathless (in the best way possible!), then pack your bags and set your sights on La Chorrera, Colombia's tallest multi-tiered waterfall.
This isn't just a stroll in the park; it's an immersive journey deep into the heart of a cloud forest, culminating in an awe-inspiring natural wonder. And let me tell you, it's absolutely worth the effort!

Getting There: Your La Chorrera Expedition Starts Here!
La Chorrera is located near ChoachÃ, a town not far from Bogotá. While it feels like a world away, getting there is an adventure in itself, whether you opt for public transport or your own wheels.
By Bus (The Adventurous Route!):This is a popular and budget-friendly option. Head to the Transoriente bus terminal (Calle 6 No. 17-06) in Bogotá. Look for buses heading to Choachà . The journey takes about 1.5 hours.
Crucial Tip
Keep your eyes peeled on Google Maps as you approach the destination! You're looking for the turn-off to the waterfall, not the town of Choachà itself. You'll want to get off at the dirt road entrance leading to La Chorrera. It's a good idea to tell the bus driver (or your helpful fellow passengers) that you're going to "La Chorrera cascada" as you get closer. I actually missed my stop and had to walk back up a hill – learn from my slight detour!

Once you're dropped off at the main road, you'll need to navigate a rather bumpy, unpaved road for about 30 minutes to reach the trailhead. This is where the local ingenuity comes in! You won't find formal taxis, but locals with 4x4s or SUVs will be waiting to shuttle visitors for a fee. I paid around 16,000 COP per person, but it can vary depending on availability and if you can share a ride with others. Trust me, it's worth it – attempting to walk this section would add another two hours to your journey through small villages, and you'll want to save your energy for the main hike!
By Car (For a Smoother Ride):If you have access to a car, especially a 4x4 or SUV, this will offer the most direct and comfortable route. From Bogotá, you'll take the road towards ChoachÃ. The drive is incredibly scenic, winding through the mountains, but if you're prone to motion sickness, be prepared! Once you reach the signposted turn-off for La Chorrera, you'll follow the dirt road all the way to the parking area at the trailhead.
Plan Your Return!
Important Departure Info:
The last bus back to Bogotá from the main road usually departs around 6 PM. I'd recommend aiming to be back at the main road by 5 PM to ensure you don't miss it.
My La Chorrera Experience: A Journey into the Cloud Forest
Stepping onto the trail at La Chorrera, you're immediately enveloped by the lush, misty embrace of the cloud forest. The views, even from the outset, are simply incredible. The air is fresh, carrying the scent of damp earth and verdant foliage.

The view from the trailhead as you descend into the valley.
The hike itself is a fantastic challenge – definitely more of an off-road adventure than a groomed path. You'll be navigating large rocks, sections of muddy terrain, and even some slightly flooded areas. This is where sturdy hiking boots really shine; they'll provide the grip and waterproofing you need. While it's certainly manageable for anyone who's done similar off-road hikes, I wouldn't recommend it for elderly individuals or those with significant mobility issues.
The journey to the main waterfall took me about 1.5 hours one-way, making for a 2.5-hour round-trip from the start of the trailhead. Along the way, I was constantly mesmerized by the sheer abundance of life. We spotted countless tropical plants, heard the calls of many birds, and even saw some cows from local farms grazing peacefully. The mist adds a magical, almost ethereal quality to the forest, and while it was a bit rainy, a light raincoat or waterproof shell jacket kept me perfectly comfortable. The hike itself is demanding enough that you won't feel cold!
What truly enhanced the experience were the local guides positioned along the trail. They offer fascinating explanations about the ecosystem, the history of the area, and even point out unique flora and fauna. It adds a wonderful layer of local insight to your trek.
The Grand Finale: Standing Beneath the Giant
Finally, after navigating the winding path, you'll hear it first – the powerful roar of La Chorrera. And then, you see it. It's truly massive, believed to be the highest multi-tiered waterfall in Colombia, cascading down a staggering 590 meters.
What makes this experience so special is the ability to get incredibly close. You can stand right at the base of the waterfall (though not in the water, as it's used by locals), feeling the incredible power and mist on your face. It's a moment of pure, unadulterated connection with nature. Despite its grandeur, it wasn't overly crowded when I visited, adding to the feeling of serene accomplishment.

Finally reaching the bottom of the waterfall!
Fueling Your Adventure & Extra Perks
There's a restaurant with washrooms located right at the beginning of the trailhead. So, whether you want to fuel up before your hike or treat yourself to a well-deserved meal afterwards, it's a convenient option. I opted to bring my own packed lunch, water, and some nut bar snacks, which I highly recommend for energy on the trail.
For the adrenaline junkies, La Chorrera also offers the chance to try rappelling down a smaller waterfall or even ziplining. It's a fantastic way to extend your adventure if you're feeling extra daring!
